Astro-Vision: What's Up with Retrograde Mercury

Hi Everyone,

Astrologers talk about retrograde Mercury cycles to non astrologer as though everyone knows exactly what this astronomical event is and how it works. Unfortunately this isn't always the case. Let me try to give a simple, and hopefully clear, explanation for the astrologer's attention to an event that takes place regularly at least 3-4 times a year.

When planets retrograde in our solar system this is an astronomical phenomena of which astrologers, after years of observation, have given psychological meaning and interpretation.

First let's get one thing clearly understood. Thousands of years ago astrology and astronomy were one. Second, the planets do not make us do anything. My philosophy is that we have free will to make choices in our life. We are not on a leash being pulled around and dictated to by the planets. But our solar system's energies and our life energies act synergistically, "as above, so below." Please, no arguments on my opinions here. You are entitled to your opinions and I'm entitled to mine. Study astrology for as long as I have and like most astrologers we tend to agree on this point.

The word retrograde is used to describe a planet as viewed from Earth when it appears to slow down, stop and move backwards in our solar system. The planets do no move backward in their orbits, they only appear to do so when slowing down and other planets are passing them at a faster speed. We see this visually from Earth as a planet moving backwards, but this is only an illusion. The planets do not move backwards.

Throughout the years, astrologes have noted that these particular Mercury cycles bring about more delays, misunderstandings, things break down or break and have to be replaced, confusion and frustration in communications than in non-retrograde Mercury times. In astrology Mercury is the planet that rules thinking, speaking, verbal communication of all types, cars, transportation, office equipment like computers, telephones and all daily travel and communications. Thus when Mercury retrogrades it is time for us to work with the energies of the astronomical phenomenon rather than against it.

But, we have a choice. We can take an umbrella if the weather person says it will rain or we can chance it and hope to stay dry and not bring the umbrella. It's a 50/50 chance either way. Astrologers are the messengers conveying a message about this cycle in hopes we all can be better prepared to make the choice to bring an umbrella or chance it and not bring one. This is the reason astrologers begin to forecaste some precautions for the retrograde cycle. Their forecasts are not meant to alarm, but to safeguard, when and if possible.

If we believe delays are going to happen just because we know it is a retrograde Mercury, is this like the self-fulfilling prophecy in which we make it so? I don't think so. Most of the population are not astrologers and do not know about these cycles and, yet, delays or mishaps occur more often than not.

Now some people will not experience delays or mishaps or misunderstandings. Perhaps their intuitive 6th sense is guiding them through their daily world during one of these Mercury retrograde cycles, and that's great.

Of course the world does not stop just because Mercury is retrograde. People keep buying cars, flying, making plans for vacations, ect. And I think that is as it should be Karmically. But for me personally, I prefer not to sign important contracts or buy expensive items during a retrograde Mercury. I have investigated this phenomenon 30 years ago when I entered this journey into the study of astrology, and for me, I would rather clean closets, desks, get piles of stuff put away than risk being aggravated, frustrated by not adhering to the general rules of this solar system event.

Years ago, teaching a basic astrology class, I told the students not to speed when they left class to go home. I said it was a retrograde Mercury in the sign of Aries (Mars rules Aries and is the planet of speed, action and aggression) and if you are used to speeding this retrograde Mercury cycle may, could, possibly, give you the ticket that you finally deserve for past speeding. Mercury retrograde can catch up to you and give you what you didn't get before.

Sure enough the following week one of my students couldn't wait to tell me the experience she had when she was driving home with her daughter from class last week. She speeds constantly she said and was on purpose going to defy the Gods and not let up on the gas pedal.

She couldn't stop laughing when the cop pulled her over and began writing her out a ticket for speeding. He thought she was being disrespectful and was thinking of ways to cite her with another ticket for what he thought was her laughing at him. She tried to explain, but no use. She said this was one ticket she did not mind paying. It taught her a lesson. Did she stop speeding? No, but she now finds out and keeps abreast of when the retrograde Mercury cycles are due to begin and then she is mindful not to speed. The choice is almost always ours.

Just a reminder that Mercury goes retrograde 3-4 times a year.

During a retrgrade Mercury cycle it is time to slow down, finish up old projects, and to reflect. This is not a time in which to begin new projects unless it is something you have had on hold for a long time or something you have wanted to do for a long time. This is a time to fix mistakes and go back to clear up piles of "stuff" that has been waiting till you could get to it. You may catch mistakes you have made in the last several months. You may ask yourself, "How did I miss that? "Now is that time to fix, mend, correct, and finish "stuff." About time!
